If you would like to receive student support (BAföG) as a pupil or student, it is important to know your student support demand. This is the sum of basic needs, housing allowance and any supplements for health and long-term care insurance and children. The maximum rate is the maximum amount you can receive if you fulfil all the requirements.
Note: The requirement is therefore not always the same as the maximum rate.

What is the BAföG demand and how is it made up?
The student support demand is the amount you can receive each month. It is made up of:
Basic demand: This depends on the type of your education and the educational institution. It forms the basis for your needs and varies for students and pupils.
Housing demand: The housing allowance depends on whether you live with your parents or not. If you do not live with your parents, the lump sum is significantly higher. It covers part of your rental costs, regardless of how expensive your actual rent is.
Allowance for health and care insurance: You will only receive these if you are no longer covered by your parents' family insurance and have to pay your own contributions to health and long-term care insurance.
Note: Up to the age of 25, you are generally covered by your parents' family insurance. Then there are no allowances for health and care insurance. After that, you can still benefit from the cheaper student insurance until the age of 30.
Allowance for childcare : For each child under the age of 14 in your household, you will receive a supplement of 160 €, which is not taken into account if you receive other social benefits.

What about BAföG maximum rate?
BAföG maximum rate is the amount that students who do not live with their parents and have their own health and long-term care insurance receive. From the winter semester 2024/25, it will be 993 € for students who do not live with their parents. This is made up as follows:
Basic demand: 475 €
Housing demand: 380 €
Allowance for health insurance: 102 €
Allowance for care insurance: 35 €
For students who still live with their parents, the maximum rate is 671 €. The difference is mainly due to the lower flat-rate housing allowance of 59 €.

How is BAföG demand calculated?
The BAföG demand is the sum of all relevant items that are necessary for your education. It corresponds to the maximum BAföG rate if you are not living with your parents and have your own health and care insurance. The most important factors include
Basic demand: Depends on your education and training centre.
Housing demand: Depends on whether you live with your parents or not.
Allowances: For health and care insurance and possibly for childcare.
Deductions due to income and assets
The calculated need is usually reduced by your own income, the income of your parents or your spouse. Assets that exceed the allowance are also taken into account. This can reduce the actual funding amount.
Student support application: How it works
To receive student support, you must submit a student support application. This can be done online or in writing. It is important to submit the application as early as possible, as the processing time can take several weeks. In the application, you must provide information about yourself, your income and assets as well as the income of your parents or spouse.
