For many prospective students, the transition to university can be financially challenging. Study start support is available to make this step easier. This article explains what study start support is, who can apply for it and what requirements must be met.

What exactly is study start support?

Study start support is financial support for students who previously received social benefits. It is intended to make it easier to start studying by providing a one-off grant of 1,000 euros. The grant is intended to help finance initial purchases such as learning materials, computers or furniture and does not have to be repaid.

Who can benefit from study start support?

Study start support is intended for students who are also entitled to BAföG, but does not have to be applied for together. The requirements are

  • First full-time degree programme in Germany (or in the EU with residence in Germany)

  • Under the age of 25

  • From a benefit community or receiving other social benefits. This is the case if you/your community of need/your household have previously received one of the following benefits:

    • citizens allowance

    • Social assistance, basic income support due to reduced earning capacity or in old age

    • Living allowance and/or child supplement

    • Benefits under the Asylum Seekers Act

    • Benefits according to compensation law

If students fulfil the requirements for BAföG, they are usually also entitled to apply for study start support. People with a low income or from socially weaker households in particular benefit from this support. There are also special regulations for people with special social needs. The application can only be submitted together with the BAföG application at BAföGdigital.

What is the study start support for?

Study start support can be applied for together with BAföG. While BAföG is for living and housing costs during your studies, study start support is for one-off expenses at the beginning of your studies. This can include a laptop or tablet, teaching and learning materials, but also costs such as a rent deposit and moving costs.

How much financial support is available for study start support?

The study start support is a one-off amount of 1,000 euros and is granted as a non-repayable grant. This sum can be a great help, especially at the beginning of your studies, to cover important purchases or moving costs. However, this is not exactly monitored.

Is repayment of the study start support required?

No, the study start support does not have to be repaid. It is a grant that is additionally awarded to BAföG recipients to make it easier for them to start their studies. This distinguishes it from the classic BAföG repayment, which begins after the end of your studies.
